FAQs

What is a Progression Agreement?

A Progression Agreement is an arrangement between private training providers, colleges and universities and provides learners with a guaranteed route from Further Education or the work place into Higher Education.

Who is the Progression Agreement between?

Overarching agreements have been signed by colleges and universities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, which shows their commitment to helping non-traditional, vocational and work-based learners access Higher Education. Training providers can also sign overarching agreements.

Institutional level agreements also exist. These agreements are between a Further Education college, training provider or work place and a specific Higher Education institution.

These agreements make guarantees to learners of an interview, or offer of a place on a course related to their qualifications and/or experience. In some cases they include additional agreements between universities and colleges about the way they work together, or about the support that is available for learners.

Why are Progression Agreements necessary?

Some progression routes onto or between courses are well established and there is no need for a Progression Agreement to support learners on these routes.

Therefore, each of our Progression Agreements only include courses where such an agreement would make a real difference to learners. These may be in areas where progression is poor from Further Education Level 3 to Higher Education or in areas where there is an identified skills shortage and a demand for higher level workers.

The HI-LLN focuses its work on developing Progression Agreements for courses linked to the following seven curriculum areas:

  • Business and Management
  • Childhood Youth and Community Studies
  • Creative Industries
  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Health and Social Care
  • Retail and Commercial Enterprise

What does a progression agreement do for me?

  • Gives you clear information about the entry requirements for the providers offering higher level education.
  • Tells you what else the college or university would like to see on your application in addition to your qualifications e.g. work experience.
  • Helps you to be better prepared for the admissions process.
  • Shows you where to get more information about going to higher education.
  • Encourages you to achieve certain qualifications and grades and where your grades do not meet the entry criteria for the progression agreement courses (e.g. GCSE maths, science or English) your college has agreed where possible to provide you with information on opportunities to gain or re-sit these qualifications.
  • Gives you the information you need to make the right decisions about your future learning.

Also

  • Your application will be given fair and equal consideration in the admissions process .The progression agreement will state if you are guaranteed an interview for a course, or you may find that your agreement guarantees you a place if you meet the minimum entry requirements.
  • The partners in higher education have clearly stated the grades that you need to achieve in order to be considered for a place.
  • Your qualification is understood by these colleges and universities. By signing the progression agreement they show that they recognise your course as an appropriate route into higher level study.
  • You will be given support from your college to make your application.
  • The HE course leaders have shared information with your college about the way their courses run, what you will study when you get there and how you will be assessed. Sometimes they have changed their HE courses to incorporate study skills and other learning techniques which will help you make a smoother transition to higher level learning.

What is a Progression Passport?

A Progression Passport is a document given to the learner, which states that a Progression Agreement exists promising the learner an interview or place on a course. Learners keep a copy of their Progression Passport document. This Progression Passport will be signed by the FE college, training provider or work place and Higher Education Institution.
