Skills and Attributes needed for Higher Education

On most degree courses special entry requirements apply to 'mature' students that reflect their greater life experience. Admissions tutors will be very pleased to discuss your plans and explain the suitability of their course(s) for your needs. But before you take the step of applying consider your own personal qualities and how they might enable you to progress.

  • Access and Higher Education (HE) admission tutors will look for these qualities:
  • Good communication skills – written and verbal
  • Good attendance and punctuality
  • Enthusiasm for the subject
  • Motivation to achieve: why do you want to improve your qualifications? For example, are you thinking about studying for self improvement or career progression? Good motivation will make your work meaningful and you will be more likely to make every effort to complete the course.
  • Willingness to study
  • Initiative
  • Motivation to undertake hard work as an individual and as a group member
  • Good time management skills
  • Have you developed good memory recall?
  • Stress management skills– do you have the ability to take the knocks of life?
  • Social skills
  • The ability to work with others
