Have you thought about the risk and emotional factors involved in taking on HE commitments?
Considering riskis useful in understanding your perceptions of the contexts for study and consequences to your personal life when you enter HE.It is important to think about how you handle levels of stress before you access study.
Things to think about before accessing Higher Education:
- Your current and future financial commitments
- Your current and future caring commitments
- Time management,
- How easy is it to get to your place of study?
- Support and resources
Another thing to consider is whether you have study space in your home where you can lay out papers and find some quiet thinking time. Don’t be put off if you haven’t enough space at home because all colleges and universities have study areas if space is a problem.
Emotional factors. It is important to understand how you may be affected by conflicting emotions within your family. Hopefully your spouse/partner will want you to go to university, but there may be conflict as you develop intellectually. It is possible that close family members will feel left behind. So do make sure that you have the emotional support you need to enter HE.
If you have an essay or a project to complete to a deadline, you will need support rather than feel you are letting the family down by not being able to join in with what they are organising. Make sure that family and friends understand about university ways and systems so you can avoid negativity about your ability and progression.
Despite all the difficulties you may be putting yourself and family through whilst you study – remember that you are a fantastic role model for your children.
A final word – skip the Bachelor and become a Master!
