Business and Management

BM

Business is an all encompassing term, covering all organisations, both large and small, that provide goods and/or services. The business world not only consists of large multinational organisations, but also non-profit organisations, government agencies, educational settings and smaller, often independent, businesses such as hairdressers, tradesmen, solicitors, restaurants, guest houses and small scale manufacturers.

When people think of careers in business, they often think of jobs in large corporations, however, general business skills are necessary in every sector of the economy. General skills needed in business include:

  • Understanding regulations and market forces
  • Critically analysing organisations
  • Marketing a company or a project
  • Managing people effectively
  • Time management and effective delegation
  • Making and carrying out decisions
  • Presentation skills
  • Project planning

Management skills are needed in all sectors of the UK economy and in all organisations. Many management skills are generic, although the context in which management takes place influences the type of skills and knowledge adopted.

The Business and Management Curriculum Group encompasses 11 Further Education colleges and 4 Higher Education Institutions from the HI-LLN members and includes all courses within the relevant departments at each of these institutions.
