October event for advisers working with offenders

The HI-LLN will be holding an event on Tuesday 13th October 2009 for 'Access to HE’ Co-ordinators and FE careers teachers to prepare them in their work advising offenders and ex-offenders.

The aim is to ensure people with a criminal record get accurate and comprehensive information, advice and guidance (IAG), which is essential for their rehabilitation.

The event will include the following:

  • Understanding the court system and the probation service, including the levels of probation.
  • Understanding which jobs certain offenders cannot do and the implications for IAG (this is important because offenders are sometimes misled in prison where they are encouraged to study a degree in a subject area they won’t be able to work in on release).
  • Admission systems for offenders - the local picture and problems
  • The applications process

The event will run from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the Novotel in Southampton. To register your interest in attending this event contact Jan Wise, Credit and Progression Manager, at jan.wise@solent.ac.uk or 023 8031 9514.
