Gosport learner Teresa scoops prize at glittering awards ceremony
Top learner Teresa Cook from Gosport was one of the local achievers to pick up an award at this year’s Unity 101 annual awards ceremony.
As one of the main sponsors of the event the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Lifelong Learning Network could nominate someone to receive an award for a special achievement — Teresa Cook was our first choice.

Teresa was nominated by Fareport Training because she had achieved so much as an adult learner. It’s never easy taking up studies again after a long break from working life, but for Teresa, who has a disabled son to care for as well as being unwell with ME, studying her NVQ qualifications in Early Education and Childcare has been an extra special accomplishment. And that’s not all! Teresa is going to university in September to study a Foundation Degree at the University of Portsmouth. She really is a great example of what can be achieved when you’re determined.
Teresa collected her prize during the Unity 101 awards ceremony at the Novotel on Friday 9th January 2009. This was the third annual awards event hosted by the Southampton-based radio station Unity 101. It’s held as a thank you to all the volunteers who give up their time to help run the not-for-profit broadcaster.
As well as all the volunteers and their families, guests at the black tie event included the Secretary of State for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, MP John Denham, The Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Brian Parnell, as well as all of the event sponsors.
