Evidencing HE Skills in NVQs

Crossing the bridge from the practical NVQ qualification to a higher level course was the hot topic on 23 October at the Legacy Botleigh Grange Hotel in Hedge End.

Approximately forty professionals involved in NVQ delivery and assessment from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight gathered to discuss the issues and challenges facing learners progressing from this vocational qualification to higher education.

The aim of the event was to improve understanding of what skills are necessary for HE study and to facilitate discussion about how NVQ assessors can encourage their students to evidence some of these skills in preparation for progression to higher level study.

The day kicked off with a lively presentation about the Skills needed at HE Level 1 by Carina Buckley from Foundation Direct, which was followed by some group activities. The first involved analysing the standard of essays in light of how assessors can support learners to achieve a good level of academic writing. The second involved NVQ assessors from similar subject areas working together to discuss evidencing preparation for HE study in NVQs.
