Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies at the University of Winchester

Charlotte Ball

I am 32 years old and work as a Learning Support Assistant in a Primary School in Southampton. I am studying at university for a Foundation Degree in Working with Children, which will result in two thirds of an honours degree when I am finished. I plan to top up my degree to full honours degree this year.

This is my story of my journey through higher education, the challenges I faced, how I have overcome these and my personal achievements.

Juggling studying with parenthood

I first became interested in Childcare when my son was a baby. I was a young single mum and I wanted to be able to earn a wage but still spend time with my son. I decided to become a registered Childminder. This involved a short course and inspection of my house. During that time, I continued to study and I completed several short courses in childcare, such as Take Ten 4 Play, Crèche worker and a Play worker certificate. These courses developed my interest in the childcare profession.

When my son started pre-school, I wanted to develop my qualifications further, so I enrolled in an NVQ Level 3. I completed my NVQ at Eastleigh College over a period of 2 years, whilst working as a Pre school assistant and a classroom assistant. This method of study was convenient for me as it enable me to work, which provided me valuable experience and I was able to receive a salary. However this did present its challenges, working, studying and being a Mum was hard work. However with the support of family and friends and perseverance I completed my NVQ.

Working and Learning

A year later I changed employment, I started working as a Learning Support Assistant. At this time I had greater responsibility in the classroom and became interested in wanting to teach and further my professional development. I had thought about teaching, but didn’t know what options were available in studying for a degree at a higher level. I found out about the Foundation degree. The degree appealed to me as it enabled me to continue working and to study on a part time basis, this suited my personal circumstances. This was a big step for me personally; deciding to study at a higher level was very daunting, because I was not very confident in my literacy abilities. I was also concerned about the required amount of study time as this was an element that I had found difficult before.

The Degree course comprises of two levels. Level 1 at college for 18 months and then level 2 at University for a further 18 months. The level 1 which I studied at Totton College, I feel was vital to the smooth transition into higher education. The first unit provided preparation for studying at this level; this examined the range of skills that was needed. I found this very useful, however the higher level of assignment writing for me personally, was an area that I found challenging. Although having clear expectations on what was involved helped and understanding that my abilities developed through experience and time, relieved my anxieties. I was surprised in my own abilities; receiving 1st and 2:1 grades gave me great personal satisfaction.

Making New Friends

Another element which surprised me was the level of support that I received from my fellow students.  We formed good relationships as a group and this created a brilliant support network. Knowing that you’re not the only one struggling and talking your problems through with each other definitely helped. The support and teaching from the college was excellent, their patience and understanding provided me with valuable guidance and preparation for level 2 at University.

Studying now at Level 2 at University, still does present its challenges, such as working full time, being a Mum and finding time to study. However the learning experience and the development of my own professional practice, has had a huge impact, not only in my working role but a new found confidence in myself and my own abilities. I have now gained a higher level of knowledge and understanding in care and education of children and this will provide a solid foundation to whatever career path I choose.
