Vision

The Lifelong Learning Network for Hampshire and Isle of Wight will focus on improving lifelong progression into and within Higher Education (HE) for work-based, non-traditional, vocational learners, including re-engaging adult learners in education. This Lifelong Learning Network (LLN) is also designed to complement the existing local Aimhigher activities that focus on younger learners.

Helping vocational learners access Higher Education

Currently learners on vocational programmes are less likely to progress on to Higher Education than for those on an academic route. About 90% of those on conventional A-level programmes enter Higher Education, but only 40-50% of those qualifying at Level 3 in vocational subjects do so.

Those who do enter HE from vocational learning programmes often find that progression within Higher Education is also problematic. In a number of areas there are fewer choices open to them, and greater uncertainty attached to the choices that do exist. The LLN will address these problems through establishing Progression Agreements.

Learning that suits you

The LLN also provides enhanced opportunities for re-engagement and progression in HE for potential adult learners in the workforce. Some of these potential vocational learners will choose to study on a full-time basis, but for many of them the ability to combine work with study will be essential. Opportunities for re-engagement and progression will take account of the wide range of vocational education, including modern apprenticeships. Other opportunities will be encouraged through employer engagement
